Lester F. Woolworth

Lester F. Woolworth, 77, of Sioux City died Thursday, April 13, 2000, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel with the Rev. Del Olivier of Augustana Lutheran Church officiating and the Sioux City Fire Department Honor Guard standing guard. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery with military rites conducted by American Legion Monahan Post 67. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with family present 6 to 8 p.m., a prayer service at 7 p.m. with the Rev. G.J. Frahm, Honorary Chaplain of the retired Professional Fire Fighters of Sioux City, reciting the Fire Fighters Prayer, all at the funeral home.

Mr. Woolworth was born Feb. 25, 1923 in Kingsley, Iowa, the son of Sylvester "Vet" and Mildred (Ragan) Woolworth.

On Dec. 31, 1914, he married Helen Louise Nelson in Dakota City.

He worked with Curtis Company from 1946 to 1952, and then joined the Sioux City Fire Department, retiring in 1978. He then owned and operated T. and L. Drapery until 1991.

He served in the military during World War II from 1943 to 1946.

He attended Augustana Lutheran Church and belonged to the International Association of Fire Fighters.

Survivors include his wife; a son and his wife, Terry and Sidney of Dakota City; two grandsons, Troy and Todd Woolworth; a brother and his wife, Merle and Jeannette of Sioux City; four sisters, Geraldine and her husband John Eik, Doreen Bailey and Donna and her husband Al Baustian all of Sioux City and Janice and her husband Dick Gatz of Ramsey, Minn.; three sisters-in-law and their husbands, Virginia and Larry Smith of Reno, Nev., Elaine and Larry Guerra of Tampa, Fla., and Betty Anne and Doug Justin of Cape Coral, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Kenny and Melvin Woolworth; and a brother-in-law, Dick Bailey.

Pallbearers will be active and retired fire fighters, Rusty Soole, Dick Ragan, Ben Reilly, Bob Mohan, Jules Bay and Sidney Skidmore.

Memorials in his name may be directed to Augustana Lutheran Church.

Raymond L. Derby

 

Raymond L. Derby, 56, of Spirit Lake, Iowa, formerly of Sioux City, died Monday, Aug. 9, 1999, at a Spirit Lake hospital.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Fri day at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sioux City, with the Rev. Al McCoy officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, with an honor guard provided by the Sioux City Fire Department. Visitation will be 5 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present 7 to 8:30 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7:30 p.m., at Larkin Northside Funeral Home.

Mr. Derby was born May 3, 1943, in Sioux City, the son of Harvey and Josephine (Dyer) Derby. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1960 to 1964.

He married Janice Molden on Dec. 22, 1962, in California. He served on the Sioux City Fire Department from 1967 until retiring in 1986. The couple moved to Spirit Lake in 1994.

He was a former member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars John W. Kidd Post 4514 in Spirit Lake, where he served as vice commander.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters and their husbands, Stacy and Steve Wessling of Sioux City and Tabitha and Roger Arnold of Sumter, S.C.; his mother of Sioux City; and three grandchildren, McKenzie and McKayla Wessling and Gavin Derby.

He was preceded in death by his father and a brother, Dan.

Pallbearers will be Vic Casey, Chuck Warren, Buzz Schmidt, Randy Buckman, Tom Little and Chris Molden.
